Health Care Planning

One of the foremost challenges faced by health care professionals is to formulate a well-devised, well-thought out plan for assisting both the patients as well as the health care givers. Care planning is an essential part of health care, but is often misunderstood or regarded as a waste of time. Without a specific document delineating the plan of care, important issues are likely to be neglected. Care planning provides a sort of ‘road map’, to guide all who are involved with the patient’s/resident’s care. The health care plan has long been associated with nursing; however, all health care professionals need to be assisted in the care giving process. In today’s world, highly expensive Health Insurance policies are not viable for most individuals. Therefore, the government needs to play a crucial part in ensuring that ‘health care’ is impartially and effectively provided to all citizens.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a new concept, the concept of ‘health promotion’ began to take shape. It was realized that public health had neglected the citizen as an individual and that the state had a direct responsibility for the health of the individual. Consequently, in addition to.disease control activities, one more goal was added to health-care planning- health promotion of individuals. It was initiated as personal health services such as mother and child health services, mental health and rehabilitation services. C.E.A.Winslow, one of the leading figures in the history of public health in 1920, defined public health care planning as: ‘the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health and efficiency through organized community effort.’

The first step in the health care planning program is accurate and comprehensive assessment. Once the initial assessment is completed, a problem list should be generated. This may be as simple as a list of medical diagnosis. The problem list may include family/relationship problems, which are affecting the parent’s overall well-being.

Following the problem list, the health-care professional must ask,’ will I be able to solve this problem? If yes, then the goal of the health-care professional must be to solve that particular problem. Moreover, this goal should be specific, measurable and attainable. The approaches towards achieving that goal should also be measurable and realistic. An example of a problem that could improve, would be health-care deficit related to hip fracture. With rehab, this problem is likely to resolve.

In case a medical problem is irreversible- such as diabetes- the next step would be to eliminate further complications or possible health deterioration. In the case of such health problems, the goal should be to retain the level of health at an optimum level.

In case of an illness, where further health complications are inevitable, the goal should be to improve the quality of life. It is note-worthy that for all medical problems, approaches must be ordered by the physician. The health care planning process is never completed until the patient is discharged from the current care setting. Periodic schedule re-evaluation is also necessary once the patient is discharged.

In the final analysis, the ultimate purpose of the health care plan is to guide all who are involved in the care of the patient and to provide appropriate treatment.

Family Health

There can surely be nothing more important in life than our health, and the well-being of others round about us. Right? Well according to the way most of us live day to day, you could forgiven for thinking the opposite. We’re always too busy to eat well, too busy to exercise. We’re sometimes even too busy to take the kids to the park, or to go on a bike ride. So let’s take a step back from work and other commitments, and look at the real importance of healthy living for both you and your family.

A healthy balanced diet alone can add years to your life expectancy. When you’re on the go, you become stressed and tired, which makes the right balance of nutrients and minerals even more important. It’s vital that you stop for the sake of your health, and plan sensible balanced meals to give you the best possible fuel for your day. Initially, think about including around five portions of fruit or vegetables in your daily diet.

It might sound a lot to start with, but you could easily fit in two portions of fruit at breakfast time, an apple for a snack and two vegetables with your evening meal. Similarly, it’s recommended by expert nutritionists that we drink at least eight glasses of water every day. Again this sounds overwhelming, but break it down into manageable amounts: a couple of glasses at breakfast or with every meal and you’re just about there. It’s simply a case of making these minute lifestyle changes, as well as avoiding high fat/sugar foods that can make a drastic change to the way you feel every day.

When it comes to the health of your family, you have even more concerns. Vulnerable relatives, whether very old or very young must be supplied with nutritious, balanced meals to ensure optimum health and to give them a fighting chance against illness and disease. If you’re in control of planning the meals for your household, you should take the initiative and start organising a balance between the vital food groups, i.e. carbohydrates, protein, and essential fats.

Encourage your family to make changes in their own lifestyles to come into line with expert health and nutritional guidance. Everyone knows what to do, and it’s no great mystery, but a healthy lifestyle is only achievable with dedication and commitment to a new way of life all round.

Health: Naturally

Health shows in a natural vitality, eagerness, spontaneity, interest in life, freedom from pain and discomfort and in expressions of good cheer, kindness and affection. It is also demonstrated in clarity of mind and a clear sense of purpose in life. Total health is great!

But total health is rare. There are few people who seem happy with their lot, who suffer no physical disease, who are loving and kind, clear minded and purposeful and who are ideal examples.

When we are young, we generally experience good health. What happens to change things?

If good health is indeed natural and we suffer problems because we don’t keep to the natural health rules it could be simply argued that we should strengthen the education of children so that they can maintain their health and co-operate with us when we attempt to restrain them from indulging in habits which are contrary to nature.

Whatever our present age, it is the knowledge that our body cells change in cycles of approximately seven years, that encourages us to make changes in our habits NOW. It is never too late to change and improve our health for the future. For some people it may require great changes and for others it will require minor readjustments.

We need to refresh our own thoughts as to what these health rules are, keeping in mind that ‘Balance’ best describes what nature requires and what is the final objective in Good Health.

Nature requires natural foods in order to function – with variety and fresh produce providing the major part of the diet.

The body requires adequate sleep and rest.

Exercise is the means of stimulating all the body functions and ensuring good circulation of blood. Also for good muscular tone and strength.

Respiration feeds the body with oxygen and ensures oxygenation of all the body cells. We need to practise breathing properly and deeply in fresh air.

Upright posture should be used in walking, standing and sitting.

We should have times of sunshine directly on our skin – but in moderation.

If we live by these rules which also depend upon us maintaining positive emotions and clear thinking we should enjoy good health and a peaceful state of mind. BUT we also know that for this to be experienced we must overcome stress, particularly emotional and mental stress or our good efforts will be undermined. We need to be relaxed. MANKIND IS SICK

Undertaking personal responsibility regarding our health is imperative but there are problems in the environment and in our social climate which affect us negatively and make community health such a problem. It is a problem which no amount of medical skills and knowledge has alleviated to the extent that we see an improvement in the general level of public health throughout the world. Rather it is the reverse, with intensification of new infectious diseases to take the place of the old, there is the general dependence upon drugs and the need for surgery is on the increase. There are few families in all the millions in our society which have not a member suffering a serious accident, or having had a condition requiring surgery. The following disturbing facts are evidence of our deteriorating health –

There are few who die a natural death through wear and tear, old age and fatigue with life and who pass into death in their sleep. Most people die in hospital and a high percentage in agony or under drugs. There are few who die healthy. Many women are unable to conceive. There are many mothers who are not able to breastfeed their babies. There are many who cannot proceed with a natural birth. Many women are having hysterectomy before mid life. Thousands of women are operated upon for breast cancer, cervical cancer and other forms of the disease. Men in great numbers suffer prostate problems and cancer. Skin cancer is a national problem and incidence is on the increase. Statistics in this country indicate that in the community, one person in four dies of cancer. One in four dies of heart disease. One in four dies of kidney failure. This leaves us with only one quarter of the population therefore, to die from any other causes. Mental disease is on the increase with many young people having psychiatric treatment from their teenage years.

Drug addiction is claiming the lives of many of our youth. Suicide victims, mainly young people, are increasing – choosing to take their own lives and considering themselves as worthless. Alcohol destroys the health of a high percentage of the population directly through physiological damage to the brain and liver and indirectly through accidents caused by alcohol. Our hospitals are increasing beyond the population increase and proving incapable of proper services. Our mental patients and those with are increasing and admitted from earlier age. Our aged people are suffering dementia and other negative symptoms of senility beyond any extent of previous decades. The vision we have is not of a happy healthy community, but possible prospects of an undignified old age inside places which do not deserve to be called ‘homes’.

It must be that we have taken the wrong track in passing over to modern medicine the responsibility of giving us good health. There must be a better way – and that is that we build our own health – the natural way.

Health Monitoring Should Begin Early

Many people trust the system of medicine to help them in times of crises. And this is certainly the truth. The emergency medical services available are able to handle most medical problems when they come up, but illnesses like cancer and diabetes don’t happen suddenly. Over the course of months and years, these problems creep into your life, causing you to be miserable and wondering if there was a way to spot this problem before it got too big. With regular  health  monitoring, you can catch problems before they get out of control. Here are some additional reasons why  health  monitoring should begin earlier rather than later.

Catch Things Before They are Too Big of Problems

Health  problems don’t typically begin suddenly. They tend to develop over the course of many weeks and months, though the symptoms and signs may be easily explained. Though you may have been feeling more tired in the past few weeks, you might have explained it as having more on your plate. If you were coughing a bit, you may have thought it was a cold. In any case, it’s easy to ignore smaller signs, only recognizing them for what they really are after being diagnosed with something more significant. With a  health  monitoring system, you can check to see if your body is trying to tell you something – and then you can have it checked out before it becomes a difficult problem. You aren’t destined to be sick. Your body is designed to be healthy – and  health  monitoring helps in this goal.

Cures Come Easier and Earlier

You will also want to try to start some sort of  health  monitoring program as early as possible since the body is better able to heal itself in the early stages of a disease as well as when you are younger. The human body slowly begins to break down as you get older, which is not a bad thing, but when you have a disease in your body, the aging process can make it more difficult to fight off – not impossible, just more difficult. You are also able to take charge of your  health , which allows you to help your doctor and to work with your doctor as you seek out cures and helpful treatments. In the early stages of illness, you might simply need to change your diet and exercise plans to help bolster your body’s immune system. By adding some good habits, getting more sleep, and reducing your stress, you will be able to change the state of your  health  now and in the future.

Be an Example for your Loved Ones

When you begin to use a  health  monitoring system to watch your  health , you can begin to show those you know how important this can be for them as well. Being the example of good  health  will not only allow you to watch your own  health , but also to inspire those around you. You will all begin to take charge of your  health , seeing that it’s important and that it makes a difference. In fact, you can help each other by checking in on the  health  assessments to see what’s working and what isn’t. The more you work on your  health  within a group of people, the more motivated everyone will be to make the necessary changes to improve your  health .

Reclaiming Good Mental Health

What is good mental health? We are all more or less mentally healthy, and this usually varies through our lives especially as we deal with difficult life events, change and so on. Whether we call this psychological wellbeing, happiness, contentment, positive mindset, all these terms relate to good mental health.

With our physical health, it’s part of our everyday discourse to be aspirational. We want to feel physically fit, energetic, strong, balanced in our weight, eating a healthy diet, supple, resilient and not prone to minor ailments. Sure we complain about our problems, and talk about how we can’t do all the things we know we ought to do. We know it’s not easy to stay physically healthy without working at it, especially if we’ve experienced health problems. We know that even if we reach the peak of physical fitness, we can’t maintain this for the rest of our lives without paying attention to it.

Research tells us that good mental health is even more beneficial than good physical health. A positive mental outlook increases the rate and speed of recovery from serious, even life threatening, illness. Psychological resilience and wellbeing gives people the strength to turn problems into challenges into triumphs.

Yet whenever I ask a group of people to tell me what words come into mind in relation to ‘mental health’, their responses are about mental ill-health! It’s as if the term has been hi-jacked to become totally problem-focused.

In the meantime, we’re experiencing an epidemic of mental ill-health. About 1 in 4 people are experiencing some form of common mental health problem such as depression, anxiety and various stress related symptoms. GP surgeries are overwhelmed with such problems, mental health services are only able to provide support for the 1% of the population with much more severe mental health difficulties, and there’s a plethora of largely unregulated services, treatments and remedies out on the private market. A recent research study showed that the majority of long term sickness absence from work resulted from stress related conditions.

The trouble with focusing on the problems and the pain, is that that’s what we become experts in. We’re looking for cures and treatments to fix the problem, instead of focusing on what makes for good mental health. We know that physical health is multi-dimensional – no-one imagines that pumping iron to build your muscles is a recipe for overall physical health, although it will certainly make you stronger for certain activities.

So what are the essentials of good mental health?

Connection is certainly one of the best known. Having positive close relationships is good for our mental health, as is having a wider network of friends, colleagues and acquaintances which will vary over time. Giving to others is another really important aspect of connection, improving our sense of self worth and wellbeing.

Challenge is about learning and development, it’s how we grow. For children, everyday brings new challenges, yet as adults we often become increasingly fearful of change, unwilling to learn new skills or put ourselves in unfamiliar situations. So expanding our comfort zone, sometimes in small ways if we’re feeling particularly vulnerable, will help develop our self-confidence and sense of personal achievement.

Composure means a sense of balance, and ability to distance ourselves from our thoughts and emotions. It means our ability to respond rather than react. This could be described as our sense of spiritual connection, which may come through a particular belief or faith, or may be found through connection with nature. A mentally healthy person will feel an inner strength of spirit, and find ways to support that.

Character relates to the way in which we interpret our experiences and our responses to them. We all have our own personal story, or stories, which we may or may not tell others. We may cast ourselves as the hero, the victim or the villain, and however we do this will impact generally on our mental health. Someone who has experienced severe life trauma may have great difficulty piecing together their story at all, leaving them feeling literally fragmented. Good mental health means having a strong sense of personal values, awareness of our own strengths, skills and resources, and personal stories of learning from mistakes, survival, success and appreciation.

Creativity represents the fun, childlike aspects of our mental health. As children we are naturally creative and we play. As we grow into adulthood, our creativity and playfulness is often discouraged or devalued, and this can cause great frustration, literally diminishing the capacity of our brain to function as well as it could. Exploring creative activities has often been found to have a powerful therapeutic effect, and good mental health certainly depends in part on opportunities to bring fun, playfulness and creativity into our lives.

These 5 C’s of good mental health offer a framework within which we can think about our mental health in the same way as we might our physical health. It’s pretty damned hard to be a perfect specimen of physical health, but then who needs to be perfect? Just like our physical health, our mental health is a work in progress and always will be.

In years gone by, many people with physical illnesses were treated cruelly because of ignorance and shame. I recall when cancer was spoken in hushed whispers as the Big C. Nowadays mental ill-health is the ‘elephant in the room’ which we need to be looking at long and hard, exposing to practical common sense and intelligent discussion.

World Mental Health Day on October 10 has been a timely reminder that good mental health really is something we can aspire to for everyone. Let’s make it so!

Health Insurance – Health Savings Account – HSA

Health  insurance is a critical part of our  health  care system. For those that are lucky enough to have  health  insurance, they know that it shouldn’t be taken for granted. For a large number of the unfortunate who don’t have  health  insurance for their families, do so at great risks.

Health  insurance has long been a popular political subject for our country. There are many that fill  health  insurance should be socialized. There are just as many feel it should be kept private. While both parties may have sound arguments, we have to accept what is available to us. So, unless you’re a government employee, or one of the dwindling corporate employees still receiving  health  insurance, you need to go out there and get it on your own.

There are a number of  health  insurance choices that should suit your specific needs. A  Health  Maintenance Organization, or more commonly called HMO, is one popular  health  insurance choice. HMOs are one of the most common forms of  health  insurance provided by employers. They allow you to visit a pre-selected hospital, doctors, or clinics, without restriction. This may or may not be totally covered by your employer, but usually comes at a fixed monthly cost.

The Preferred Provider Organization, or the PPO, is similar to the HMO concept. With the PPO, you are not forced to get a little dig their doctor or hospital. When you do, however, you receive a discount for doing so. This system works on the reimbursement, philosophy. Essentially, you are reimbursed by your insurance company after services are rendered. Sometimes, they will bill your insurer at the time of service.

Indemnity  health  insurance plans are eight other top and plan that has become quite popular these days. One reason is, you are able to choose any position or hospital you choose. The drawback to this of course is that it comes at a premium. In addition to higher costs ease typically require a larger deductible. For the hypochondriac this may not be the best choice. Those that like to make lots of visits to hospitals might find other plans more suitable. But for those that have to be on their deathbed to see a doctor, this may be an appropriate plan.

The  Health  Savings Account, HSA, has some similarities to the indemnity  health  insurance plans. As the  Health  Savings Account is probably most suitable to the individual that doesn’t require a lot  health  care, or checkups. These individuals, which most commonly are men, may find the  Health  Savings Account to be a good choice for them.

Health  Savings Accounts are a way to both have a way to save and pay for medical expenses. Any contributions that are made to the  Health  Savings Account that go unused for medical purposes are retained in a savings account. This savings account can hold many popular investments, such as mutual funds. So, getting back to the individual that avoids medical care, this individual gifts for both best of both worlds. They get the protection of the much-needed  health  insurance. This provides protection against large medical or accident issues. But, if these funds go unused, they get the benefit of putting the money away for retirement. Any after-tax dollars that are contributed to the  Health  Savings Account can be detected, up to $2900 for 2008.

Choosing a  health  insurance plan may seem like a very confusing process. There is no open and shut method of choosing the best  health  insurance. Each individual is different, with different  health  needs. The most important step here is to get some form of  health  insurance. Go in without adequate  health  insurance puts you and your family at tremendous risks. And those risks just aren’t worth the possible consequences.

Health and Wellness 101

A vast difference exists between the words health and wellness. While most people consider these words to convey similar meanings, their definitions vary considerably. Health, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is defined as, “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit; especially freedom from physical disease or pain.” More simply put, health is a conditional state. A person can be in good health or bad health, based on their physical and emotional symptoms. As well, a person can alter the condition of their health by changing their habits for better or for worse. For example, if a person is considered unhealthy due to a weight problem or high blood pressure, they can start exercising, eating a healthy diet, and changing poor lifestyle habits. If this person eventually loses weight and lowers their blood pressure, the doctor may declare that they are now in good health. However, the term health is conditional. This person can easily slip back into a state of unhealthiness by returning to the habits that got them there in the first place.

On the other hand wellness is defined as, “the quality or state of being in good health, especially as an actively sought goal.” Wellness, unlike health which is conditional, is a continuous state of optimal health that is maintained through persistent effort. If health and wellness were designated as running terms, health would be a sprint and wellness a marathon. Wellness, like health, does account for the physical, emotional, and spiritual state of a person. However, wellness primarily refers to a person’s continual effort to strive for peak performance and overall well-being in the physical, emotional, and spiritual realms.

It is for this reason that corporate wellness plans are essential to a company’s long-term success. Workplace health programs do not just promote employee health, but also stress the importance of wellness-a continuous state of health and well-being. The benefits of long-term employee health for a company include less payment towards health plans, happier workers, and higher production rates. While it may seem to be common knowledge, a person who is physically healthy and emotionally stable will perform at higher levels than an employee who is dissatisfied with his or her overall health. This does not just benefit a company while the program is in place, but long after as a result of its employees profiting from a healthy lifestyle. A wellness lifestyle encompasses more than a person’s physical state. Emotional and spiritual health is also taken into consideration. Now, the importance of good employee health should not be downplayed. It is extremely important to encourage all employees within a company to endeavor to reach a healthier state. However, striving for good health should not end once a person reaches their desired health goals. A journey towards wellness is what constitutes effective corporate wellness plans.

Social Health

Social health, along with mental and physical health, is one of the key aspects to determine the general well-being of a person. The importance of social health has not been a big focus when people talk about health. However, experts say that the social well-being of an individual is just as important. Social health refers to the ability of an individual to thrive in the society and interact with other people, a form of mental health. This incorporates different elements of a person’s character, personality and social skills. A healthy person should be able to function in society and reflect social norms. Social health could also refer to the general health of society, taking into consideration how people behave and treat one another. A healthy society is also a requirement for a person to function socially. The existence of governing law, wealth distribution, levels of social capital, and the public’s access to decision-making processes are some of the indicators of a healthy society.

According to studies and research, social interactions play an important role in improving mental and physical health. It is not enough that a person exercises every day, eats a balance diet and goes to some spa to relax. A healthy individual also socialize with the people around him and forms different kinds of relationships. A healthy person is able to keep friendship, intimacy or other personal relationships. A bond between a person and the people around them provides a positive attitude towards life and makes it easier for to cope with stress. That’s why a healthy person knows how to call their friends and ask for some advice in times of need. Popular studies also show that a person overcomes illness better when surrounded by a support group of families and friends. Isolation on the other hand can lead to mental illness. A person, who is already suffering from depression, needs people to understand what they are going through and help them recover. Being alone only aggravates the condition.

These are only a few reasons why social health have been receiving more and more recognition as a vital determinant of one’s general health. Health includes healthy social relationships for complete mental health.
